Fellowship arising from the common Love of music.The name of the first piece as well,one I wrote for Brother Ras Moshe and I to play on a live Brooklyn Radio station called Free 103.9 about a solid decade ago.Later on in the concert I had an arrangement of the first tune I ever wrote in Jackson Heights Queens called Knee Braces.I told the 12 Houses how in high school I had Knee Braces just like Forest Gump,and that this piece was a dirge,as sad as could be.
They disagreed and told me that the vibe was quite the opposite,that this piece contained elements of joy.As soon as they said it I knew it was true.I also knew that this was the piece that would tap the deepest emotional well springs of the night,and for that I would need Laura Ortman,gifted to engage music on the most personal levels.
In one of the brightest musical moments of my life I had a Plunger Conversation with my new friend,Trombone master Art Baron,from the actual Ellington orchestra.I met Art the same way I met Giuseppi Logan,and was given his name before I knew it leading me to ask..”Are you Art Baron?” Right that day Art told me to give him a call and right away I knew that the missing Trombone element in the 12 Houses that I had long thought about but could not solve had just passed before my eyes.The only explanation for these kind of events is simply that they are meant to be.
Art and I got down on a musical portrait of brother Daniel Carter.Both DC and GL are going to guest with the 12 Houses down the road.The day after chapter 3 another new friend of mine,Sandra Sprecher,sent the following quote that I had never heard from Johann Goethe

I am not often moved by words,but these words here are singing my song.They got me to see how the events leading up to the creation of this very special group of musicians were no accident.
They also have me inspired to take this project way beyond any perceived boundaries.I see festivals,I see big concert halls,I see EUROPE.
There’s something bigger going on behind this whole thing.We have discovered something important,something that must be.In truth the musical relationships inherent to the 12 houses started as far back as the mid 90’s when Ryan Sawyer and I had people literally dancing on the walls at the Rhinecliff Hotel.I met Charles Waters up there where I was on exile from NYC living another life on another planet
We create as we go.Create to live.Live by creating.A musical journey like no other has begun.My friend James Keepnews observed he had never heard such dynamic range in a large group.Yes! I try to set up events that create deep focus on very personal sounds and concepts.We shout so that your listening when we whisper.We blend different aspects of music that couldn’t mix and grow together until now.
I can see Duke smiling at me.He knows I was listening when he told the truth about his process,and the best way to deliver a musical message.
I can see Albert Ayler smiling at me.He knows that I took his message inside my heart.I have to add my own message.
That’s it! We must become more than the sound of Love,we must become Love itself. . . . .
So far,so good.I knew the Matt Lavelle story would someday have a happy ending.
After all,I wrote it. . . . . .
